Life at the hostel extends well beyond the classroom. A highlight for many younger boarders is the Sunday activities, where they take part in group outings and events designed to build friendships and confidence. In addition, boys often enjoy trips to Roberts Park or the swimming pool after prep or dinner, providing time to relax, exercise, and bond with friends.
Sport is central to hostel life. The majority of boarders play rugby, and whether boys are on the field or cheering from the sidelines, attending matches is a key part of our community culture. Regular access to school facilities — such as the gym, McCaw Room, and Littlebourne Park — ensures boys stay active and connected.
These activities are not just recreation; they are opportunities to strengthen teamwork, responsibility, and resilience, helping boarders develop into well-rounded young men.
The Mitchell Cup is one of the most popular traditions at School House, running across the entire year. Every border is placed into a house made up of boys from all year levels, so juniors and seniors compete side by side. This mix creates strong bonds and gives younger students the chance to learn from older peers, while seniors develop leadership skills.
Events range from sports like rugby, basketball, and touch to cultural challenges such as quizzes and team-building games. Each competition earns points for a House, building excitement and healthy rivalry throughout the year.
The focus is on participation and teamwork rather than winning alone. It brings the whole hostel together, fosters school spirit, and ensures that every boy feels part of something bigger.
