In June 2025 Otago Boys' High School completed another very successful Educational Review Office review cycle. Working alongside ERO for the last 3 years the school has developed strong practice in curriculum, evidence based teaching practices, attendance and literacy and numeracy.
In School House and with the provision for International students, the Education Review Office has backed the school's approach and Boards leadership.
Key highlights of the school's evaluation:
Classroom effectiveness and relationships:
- Respectful relationships between teachers and learners develop settled, positive classroom environments.
and on school leadership:
- Leaders are strengthening the collection, analysis and response to data to ensure the school knows how well it is improving learner engagement, progress and achievement at all year levels.
- Leaders mentor teachers in developing a range of strategies to make teaching and learning increasingly effective and engaging for their learners.
- Leaders work collaboratively to build staff capacity in having an increasingly positive impact on learner wellbeing, progress and achievement
Key highlight of the School House evaluation:
- Boarders report that they experience a positive and supportive hostel environment. Staff collaborate effectively to provide the conditions that fully support boarders’ wellbeing and learning in the hostel. They regularly monitor boarders’ academic progress. Boarders have access to a wide range of activities as part of normal hostel life and are fully involved in co-curricula activities.
Key highlight of the provision for International Students:
- The school has established processes for reviewing its provision for international students and compliance with the Code. School governance and leadership are informed about student wellbeing, learning and engagement.
- The school seeks regular feedback from students about their school and homestay experiences. Care is taken over course selection to match international students’ interests and to support their plans beyond school. The school has well established processes for maintaining contact with host families as well as international students’ parents and caregivers.
- Students report that they appreciate their meetings with the director who monitors their academic progress and wellbeing. They are involved in a wide range of school extra curricula activities, as well as in activities outside school.
