NZSS Triathlon Championships 2026

Last week, the Bay Audiology NZ Secondary Schools’ Triathlon took place in Tauranga under extremely challenging conditions, as athletes battled through what could only be described as a “weather bomb.”

Due to the severity of the conditions, the bike leg was cancelled, turning the event into an aquathlon. The swim was moved from the main beach to Pilot Bay because of heavy swell, and both the swim and run were completed in difficult weather.

Despite this, our athletes produced some outstanding results. In the U14 Boys’ race, Fletcher Webster placed an impressive 5th—just 43 seconds behind the winner—while Ethan Kaina ran strongly to finish 8th. In a strong U19 Boys’ field, Henry Hodgson crossed the line in 13th, competing against quality athletes, including the fast-footed Sam Ruthe. Henry also backed up his performance with a bronze medal in the male 750m swim.

Preparation through the local Dash ‘n’ Splash races—run by the supportive Dunedin Triathlon and Multisport Club and supported by My Ride—proved invaluable, with the boys having already endured tough conditions throughout the season that prepared them well for what they encountered up north.

Finally, a big thank you to the parents for supporting the boys, transporting them, and braving the tough weather conditions. A special shout-out also goes to Simon Dawson for capturing the event through his photos.
