What defines you?
I want you to take a moment and think—not about grades, trophies, results, or what others think of you—but about what truly defines you.
It isn’t what you’re born with or how you were brought up. It isn’t the results you achieve, the games you win, or the recognition you receive. Take, for example, the First XI Cricket side, who played in a tournament last week hoping to qualify for the Secondary School Boys Cup. As much as I could stand here and make excuses about the weather, the opposition, or why we fell short, the loss itself isn’t what defines us. What defines us is the way we respond, how we face the next day, and how we confront challenges and criticism.
For those of you wondering how this applies beyond a single game or result, the principle is the same for every part of life. What defines you isn’t a single event or outcome; it’s the effort, the choices, and the actions you take every day. Every decision, every moment you choose to keep going, to practice, to improve, or to do the right thing—that’s what shapes you.
But how does this define you? It isn’t about luck or talent—it’s about persistence, discipline, and consistency. The standards you hold yourself to and the responsibility you take for your own growth are what last. Success isn’t just about being the smartest, the toughest, or the strongest in the room—it’s simply about being in the room, day in and day out, showing up when it gets hard.
If there’s one word I want you to take away, it’s this: become. I know it doesn’t sound flashy or overly exciting, but it is powerful. Become someone you want to be. Become someone others aspire to be. But most importantly, become the best version of yourself. Make the right choices even when no one is watching. Help that junior who is struggling, or treat someone with kindness without expecting anything in return.
The people sitting next to you—your friends, classmates, or even the guy you’ve never spoken to—can inspire you, but they don’t define you. What defines you is what you choose to do, how you respond, and the habits you build. That’s how you leave an impact that lasts beyond any result or final whistle.
In true Otago Boys’ fashion, I’ll end with a quote:
“The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
