Otago Boys’ High School once again had a strong presence in the Dunedin Secondary Schools’ Futsal Competition, entering an impressive 13 teams – seven senior and six junior.

The continued growth in numbers highlights just how popular futsal remains at the school.

Otago Boys’ teams featured prominently across the grades, with representation in both the Senior and Junior Division 1 finals – the junior final being an all-OBHS affair.

In the Senior Division 1 final, the Blues faced a tough challenge, playing immediately after returning from a demanding three-day tournament. Up against a fresh and well-drilled Trinity Catholic College side – who had set the benchmark all season – the Blues were unable to get the result. In the Senior Division 1 playoff, the Senior Golds overcame a fatigued OBHS Senior White team.

Across the other senior grades, there were several close contests. In Division 2, both the Titans and Reds went down in tight matches, with the Reds particularly unlucky after losing goalkeeper Hamza Von Hofler at a crucial stage when they looked on track for victory. In the Social Division, OBHS Senior Social also narrowly lost their final game.

The junior grades saw plenty of success. In Division 2, the Junior Reds – who finished as top qualifiers – were edged 3–2 in a close final by John McGlashan College Red, finishing as runners-up. The other Division 2 teams performed well, with Junior United securing a convincing win to finish their season and Junior City placing third overall. In the Junior Social grade, OBHS finished strongly with a big win, highlighted by hat-tricks from Samir Alghourani and Joel Acevey.

A big thank you to parents and caregivers for their support on the sidelines throughout the season. We also acknowledge the boys who contributed as referees, along with managers Jacob Brown and Mike McGarry, for their time and commitment.
