Eid Mubarak!

This term, in the English Language (ESL) classes, junior students learned about Ramadan as part of their unit on “Festivals”.

This helped students gain a better understanding of this holy month and appreciate the commitment their Muslim peers make during this period of fasting.

For many Muslim students, rising early to eat before dawn, attending a full day at school, and participating in routine after-school activities while fasting (no food or water from dawn to sunset) can be challenging, yet deeply meaningful spiritually.

At the end of Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr is celebrated. This year, the celebration coincided with the Otago Anniversary weekend. To mark Eid, and with Easter just around the corner, the ESL students held a special shared lunch, recognising that sharing food is central to both celebrations. Students brought lovingly prepared dishes to share, and for many ESL students, it was their first time tasting so many new and delicious foods.

We would like to thank all the students and families who generously prepared dishes for the lunch, Mr Walker for blessing our food, and Mr Harvey, Ms Kelly, Ms Ross, Dr Capon, Mr Albahnasawi, and Ms Moore for also coming along to support the students during this special meal.
