At Otago Boys’, we don’t just aim for "good enough"; we aim for excellence.
For students looking to push past the standard curriculum, the NCEA Scholarship exams represent a fantastic academic challenge.
At Tuesday’s senior assembly, I challenged the boys that if they received a subject endorsement with Excellence, or an overall Merit or Excellence endorsement last year, they should be targeting at least one Scholarship exam in 2026, and many are capable of taking on more.
"Why," Scholarship isn’t just extra work; it’s deeper learning.
Academic Growth and Challenge:
Deeper Learning: Scholarship exams push you beyond the standard NCEA Level 3
Critical Thinking: These exams emphasise high-level critical thinking, problem-solving, and the ability to apply knowledge to complex situations.
Improved Study Skills/University Preparation: Preparing for the rigorous Scholarship assessments can significantly refine your study habits, time management, and research skills and the style of questioning and the depth of knowledge required often mirror university-level study, providing a strong foundation for tertiary education.
Recognition and Future Opportunities:
Academic Recognition: Achieving a Scholarship is a prestigious academic achievement that is recognised by Otago Boys and universities
Monetary Rewards: These can range from a one-off payment of $500 for a single subject to $10,000 per year for three years for the most outstanding scholars.
Personal Development:
Increased Confidence: Engaging with challenging material and succeeding in Scholarship exams can significantly boost your academic confidence.
Self-Discipline: The self-directed study often required for Scholarship develops valuable self-discipline and independent learning skills.
Discovering Passion: Exploring a subject at Scholarship level might deepen your interest and passion for that area of study.
To get involved, I encourage all interested senior students to have a conversation with their subject teachers this week. Every subject has a designated Teacher in Charge (TiC) of Scholarship who can walk them through the specifics, and for general coordination and advice, Mr. Richard Harvey is the primary point of contact. As we move into 2026, let’s see our students push their boundaries and discover exactly how far their academic passion can take them.
