It was a wet and rather dark start on Sunday morning as food and gear were loaded onto the bus.
Despite the early start (and questionable levels of consciousness), spirits were impressively high. After a couple of pit stops, we arrived at the homestead, where the boys began their first official mission: walking into the lodge.
Sunday was spent hiking in, unloading luggage and food, and becoming acquainted with our home for the week—Aspiring Lodge.
Fortunately, the weather was cooperative for the remainder of the trip. Aside from one very chilly day, we enjoyed clear conditions all week, with the rain holding off until our walk back out to the bus.
The week was packed with activities: walks, an overnight camp at “Big Rock,” kayaking, checking trap lines, team-building challenges, a swim at Wishbone Falls, a walk to see the glowworms, and, of course, eating! A great deal of eating. The lodge kitchen was often busy, and by the end of the week, the boys had developed some very respectable culinary skills.
There were many highlights throughout the trip, but one special addition was the company of Mr Zanis’ pup, Tychie. Acting as both an enthusiastic trail guide and a loyal companion, Tychie accompanied the group on walks and welcomed daily cuddles. Her presence added an extra layer of enjoyment for both staff and students.
The boys were fantastic throughout the week, and the lodge was constantly buzzing with activity and good humour. Hopefully, everyone returned home tired but fulfilled—and certainly far more competent in the kitchen than when they arrived.
