The Otago Boys' High School 1st XI and 2nd XI cricket teams went to Christchurch for their second away interschool of the year versus Christ's College.
Although there was a delayed start, spirits were high with the Heathcote Williams Shield on the line in the 1st XI match. The OBHS 2nd XI and Christ's College 1st XI both sent their opponent into bat on what looked to be a green pitch on both the Christ College #1 Pitch & #3 Pitch.
The Christ’s College 2nd XI started well with a 88 run partnership until Conor McIntyre broke the partnership. With some sustained bowling pressure, Otago Boys' High School managed to wrestle the game back to 118-6 with Will Pyper managing a 4 wicket haul along with Kade Lawrie and Sam Hobbs picking up crucial wickets. Christ's eventually declared at 164-8 sending Otago Boys' in for the last 30 minutes of the day.
The innings didn't start well for Otago Boys' slumping to 11-4. However, Captain Will Pyper 66 (109) and Sam Hobbs 50* (109) saved the day with a 115 run partnership putting OBHS back in the match. Eventually OBHS declared for 141-6.
On the #1 Pitch Christ's were made to pay with a Caleb Ede 100 (119 balls) scoring ten 4's and three 6's in the process. Alongside this Sam Brophy added a handy 37 at the top of the order continuing his great run of form this season. Sam Drake 28 (31) at the start of day 2 ensured a strong finish to the innings with OBHS finishing 254 all out.
The OBHS 2nd XI started their second effort with the ball well with Kade Lawrie managing to knock the top of the order off with Elijah Hutton-Neill taking a very handy catch at first slip. Many edges fell through the slips from Kade Lawrie's opening spell, however, the bowling effort was a sustained one with Christ's teetering at 33-4. A partnership however was formed between Christ's middle order allowing them to declare late on the second day - the target set for OBHS 2nd XI was 132 in 21 overs.
Over on the #1 block Christ's College were aggressive with the bat and eventually declared on 149-6 after 20 overs. This ended up being a mistake/oversight because they were still 6 runs short of not following on and Otago Boys' High School enforced it. OBHS opening bowlers Zak Rizwan and Sam Drake picked up 5 wickets between them in reasonable time and the Christ’s College innings petered out. Christ’s College were eventually bowled out for 185 the match was drawn and the Heathcote Williams Shield retained.
The OBHS 2nd XI chasing 131 in 21 overs started with a few boundaries from openers Harry Moir and Otis Murray however, it was short lived both getting bowled trying to accelerate the run rate due to the pressure of chasing down the run a ball target. However the innings still had plenty of momentum in it and there was optimism in the dressing room with plenty of batting to come. With Mikey Hart 27 (34) rotating the strike allowed the star of the afternoon - Frederick Dowling to step up and take the game by the scruff of its neck. He thumped 72 (44) hitting nine 4's and three 6's and in the process put his side right on target. Although these two eventually departed, Kade Lawrie and Sam Hobbs showed composure with the bat to bring the team home with 2 balls to spare. Getting an outright win in one & a half days was a massive effort from the team.
