28th September - 2 October 2026 - Gisborne
This competition has been running since 1989, having been set up by Mt. Maunganui resident and surfing pioneer Bob Davies. He recognised a need to have the surfing and athletic efforts of high school students properly acknowledged alongside more traditional sports.
12 secondary school aged surfers from the Otago secondary schools will be selected to form a team and represent the Otago region. Trials will be held in Dunedin to select surfers and all interested students must be surfing at a competitive level. (See below for selection criteria).
The divisions are U14/U16 & U18 (male and female). Surfers compete against each other on an individual basis, however equally as important is the interregional competition which declares a winning team from a particular region - as well as age group national individual champs.
The Otago team has a proud history with strong showings in multiple years but we’re yet to win the title. In 2023 we came 4th out of 12 teams and we had four individual national champions: Danny Carse, Elliot Brown, Jaya Reardon and Alexis Owen.
Other teams in the competition are Northland, Coromandel, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Taranaki, Westport, Canterbury, Gisborne, Wellington and Auckland.
