Water polo is a fun contact sport that combines many aspects of other sports and is played while treading deep water.
For boys aged 13–18, it is considered a physically challenging yet rewarding team sport. Water polo hits a sweet spot between fast paced play, strategy, and camaraderie.
It provides a safe, regulated outlet for high energy and physical competitiveness, but the water minimizes the risk of high-impact injuries like concussions or broken bones common in rugby or football. It is low-impact on joints (knees/ankles) compared to land sports.
Games are fast-paced and short, only about 25 minutes. The fitness gains happen almost accidentally because the game is so engaging. It is a game of strategy and players must communicate constantly, set up power plays (like in ice hockey), and outsmart the goalie.
At OBHS, we are very lucky to have the expertise of two great adult coaches who have lots of experience. We train with them on a Tuesday evening at 7pm in Moana Pool and we also offer an early morning swim fitness training at 7.15am on a Monday morning. Games are on a Thursday evening and match times are decided weekly and can be between 3.30 - 8.30pm.
