Freddie Hore – Volunteer Teaching in Nepal
Recently, we were contacted by Freddie Hore, who was a prefect in 2024. Since leaving OBHS, Freddie has been studying at Otago University, and this summer has decided to volunteer at the Samata Shikshya Niketan School in Bhaktapur, Nepal.
‘Samata Schools’ are well-known in Nepal, and they were established as a charity to provide affordable private education for NZ$2 per day. The school Freddie teaches in is also constructed out of bamboo, making it cheap to run and a world first. There are over 500 students ranging in age from 3 to 16 at the school. You can read more about this programme here and watch a news clip about these schools here.
For Freddie, a typical day involves rotating around each grade and teaching grammar, reading, pronunciation and playing games. The students also like to learn bits of foreign languages so Freddie has welcomed the chance to teach some Te Reo and French, which he is studying at University. He says that volunteer English teaching is a great application of geography and language learning processes that he learned at Otago Boys. Freddie has also accompanied students on many ‘Local Studies’ trips around Bhaktapur. Helping large classes cross the roads here can be quite a challenge!
Freddie is a great advocate for volunteering overseas, stating that it is a great way to travel affordably and gain experience during the university break. He found this position on a platform called Worldpackers. He says, “I am very grateful to have chosen Nepal to be my first volunteering destination. The people here are kind, the food is good, and it has surprised me how well Nepali people already speak English. I just wish I could stay longer at the school, and hope to continue volunteering in more countries in the future.”
We wish Freddie well on his endeavours to give back to society and are proud of him for honouring the Otago Boys’ way.
