Year 10 Languages - Ein leckeres fin de l'année!

On Thursday and Friday of Week 8, the annual French and German Cooking Days took place.

This is an event that is only offered to Year 10 Languages students who do a whole year of French or German. Boys get involved in cooking their own food, typical of France or Germany.

In German class, we prepared and ate Käsespätzle. This cheese dumpling dish hails from Swabia in South West Bavaria. We also had Königsberger Klopse, poached meatballs in a white lemon and caper sauce, originally a Prussian dish. For dessert, we kept it simple with Vanillen Eis mit heissen Himbeeren, also known as "Heisse Liebe", ice cream with hot raspberry sauce, popular in Southern Germany and Austria.

In French class, we made Tarte flambée from the Alsace region, a flatbread pizza made with crème fraȋche, bacon, onion, and Gruyère cheese. There was a competition to see who could make the best Ratatouille, a traditional Provencal dish made with tomatoes and summer vegetables. Perhaps the most daring dish was the Soufflé au Chocolat, which dates back to the early 18th century, with the chocolate version being popularised by Antoine Carême, the Godfather of classic French cuisine. Soufflé is hard to get right. However, as you can see from the photos, the boys had great success with this dish, which disappeared even before the soufflé had time to fall!
