Week 7 Hostel Update

The end of term is now in sight, with just a couple of weeks left, and many boys are away on exam leave.

This has created a quieter vibe at School House, allowing us to focus on creating a more homely atmosphere and attending to some much-needed maintenance. It is amazing the difference a few modifications, some sofa covers, new cushions, and a splash of fresh paint have made.

Huge thanks go to Lachie Hall, who has been diligently painting our entranceway and finishing off various other areas around School House.

The prep room has been transformed into a dual-purpose area. By painting it a lighter colour and adding some new furniture, it has been repurposed, allowing it to be used for music practice as well.

Hostel staff will be undergoing professional development and upskilling with courses available via NZ Boarding School Association upgrades in the New Year.
We also welcome Harrison Collins, who has joined us as a new Housemaster.

Hawthorne has a special new addition. Last Sunday, Declan Roulston rescued a duckling that had been abandoned by its mother. Carter Sutherland has been taking very good care of “Donald,” who has remarkably survived living in a cardboard box—although I hear he has recently been upgraded to a cat-carrier box.

On Friday, 28th November, we will welcome a fresh group of Year 8 boys into the hostel for their first sleepover—an exciting time for both boys and their parents, with lots of nervous anticipation about how next year will unfold. I can’t help but look at our Year 9 boys now and note how much they have grown, not only physically but emotionally too.

My first year as Matron has gone so fast. I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know all the boys and caring for them to the best of my ability. I have been impressed by the good manners and respect shown throughout School House. It is wonderful to work with such a great bunch of boys and witness them growing into fine young men.

Manners maketh the man.
A person’s character is defined by their behaviour and how they treat others.
