OBHS Robotics Team Invited to Nationals

The OBHS Robotics team (Indiana Drones) has achieved outstanding success, earning an invitation to compete at the national championships following a strong performance at the regional competition.

Team members Declan Gemmell, Ryder Greig, Jack Orlovich, Bennett Potter, and Stuart Scott impressed judges across all divisions, taking home the trophy for Best Research Archaeology Project.

The competition is judged in four parts, and the team won the research project category. For the first LEGO League competition, teams must develop an innovation that benefits the field of archaeology. The boys came up with a range of ideas before visiting the University of Otago’s Archaeology Department, where they used photogrammetry technology to 3D model a moa bone. This technology stitches together multiple images to create accurate 3D models, which can then be used to study artifacts in detail. The key advantage is that it allows researchers to examine objects without damaging them, helping to preserve their integrity. Additionally, the 3D models can be shared with universities and researchers around the world, expanding access to valuable archaeological material.

Despite having only a month to prepare, the boys worked hard to refine their design, research, and programming skills in the lead-up to the event. While the finals round didn’t go exactly to plan, their consistent results in the other three categories ensured they earned enough points to secure a place at nationals.

Congratulations to the team on their creativity, perseverance, and teamwork.

We wish them all the best as they prepare to represent OBHS on the national stage.
