Unlocking Potential: Year 12 Leadership

This week, our prospective Year 13 Prefects engaged in their second leadership session centered around the empowering theme: "What is Your Superpower?"

The session was designed to encourage self-reflection, build awareness of diverse personality types, and highlight the critical importance of collaborative, balanced teams.

A key component of the session was exploring the differences between introverts and extroverts. Students learned that these aren't just labels but represent distinct ways people gain and expend energy.

  • Extroverts tend to thrive in social settings, draw energy from external sources, and often process thoughts by talking them through.

  • Introverts typically recharge through solitude and reflection, and they often think deeply before speaking.

Understanding this spectrum is vital, as it emphasizes that every member brings a unique and valuable perspective to a team, regardless of their dominant communication or processing style.

To put these ideas into practice, students participated in the famous Marshmallow Challenge. Tasked with building the tallest possible free-standing structure using only 20 sticks of spaghetti, one yard of tape, one yard of string, and a marshmallow, the students had to quickly organize, communicate, and execute under pressure. McIndoe took the win for the tallest structure!

This fun, hands-on activity was a powerful metaphor for teamwork, demonstrating in real-time the value of a balanced team. The blend of personalities—from the bold initiative of an extrovert to the thoughtful planning of an introvert—led to the most innovative and resilient designs. A balanced team can approach problems from multiple angles, leading to well-rounded solutions.

The session concluded with students taking time to reflect on their individual strengths and articulate their personal "superpower"—that unique quality or skill they bring to the table. By challenging themselves to recognize and own their capabilities, our future Year 13 leaders left the session better equipped to appreciate the diverse strengths of those around them.

We look forward to seeing how they apply this newfound self-awareness and understanding of team dynamics as they step into their final year! ✨
