Year 13 students Yusuf Nagdee and Darren Lui have recently returned from Costa Rica after competing at the 2025 Powerlifting World Championships.
Representing New Zealand, Yusuf placed 22nd in the world in his category — an outstanding effort against some of the strongest lifters globally.
He finished with impressive lifts of a 215kg squat, 140kg bench press, and 230kg deadlift. Fellow OBHS lifter Darren Lui placed 15th out of 30 competitors, achieving a 187.5kg squat, 130kg bench press, and 252.5kg deadlift.
Beyond the competition, both boys said it was an incredible experience connecting with the New Zealand team and meeting athletes from around the world — an experience they will carry forward in their powerlifting journeys.
Congratulations to both Yusuf and Darren on an amazing achievement and for representing OBHS and New Zealand with pride!
