Following a successful Intercollegiate Shoot in Balfour, our students undertook a final weekend away in Central Otago
Greg King, father of Jonathon King (who was part of our team from 2022–2024), was instrumental in getting the Wanaka Intercollegiate Competition back on the calendar after a three-year break.
Wanaka turned on a hard frost and a blue-sky day, with perfect conditions. Thirteen squads competed, and the Wanaka Club can be proud of their efficient organization and encouraged by the number of students who turned up to participate. Greg and Jonathon are pictured with our team in Wanaka.
Jackson Stevens, Konrad Todd, Tom Collie, Dustin Young, Leo Burgess, and Jack Scurr all stepped up to represent Otago Boys' in Wanaka. Our results were favorable and encouraging, with students achieving some perfect scores. Ammunition was depleted in the final shoot-offs to achieve the results listed below.
1st Teams Points Score: OBHS
1st Junior Skeet: Konrad Todd
DTL High Gun: Tom Collie
HOA Points Score: Tom Collie
2nd DTL Senior: Leo Burgess
3rd Single Rise: Leo Burgess
3rd Single Barrel: Dustin Young
The Alexandra Clay Target Club hosted a very efficient Intercollegiate Competition on Sunday, September 7, at their club in a former quarry near Galloway. Having two competition days back-to-back is good for the boys' shooting as it prepares them for the two to three consecutive days at Nationals. Weather conditions were unfavorable with strong winds and an icy bite fresh off the mountain ranges. There were 14 squads in attendance, and scores were down for all.
The coveted Taieri Shield is a feature of this competition. The Fish and Game Otago v Southland Skeet Challenge and DTL Challenge are the final events in the Intercollegiate Competition. Three of our students represented Otago. Sadly, Southland took out the trophy this year.
A new award, the Jack Heslip Trophy, was awarded to Konrad Todd, a Year 9 student at Otago Boys' High School. Jack is in Year 13 at Northern Southland College and has represented New Zealand in Clay Target. This trophy is his legacy, recognizing the top junior shooter from our Intercollegiate Competition scores across Southland, Dunedin, Nightcaps, Balfour, Wanaka, and Alexandra. We are very proud of Konrad, who joined our squad this year.
Jack Heslip Trophy Top Gun Junior: Konrad Todd
Otago Fish and Game Team: Tom Collie, Jackson Stevens, and Dustin Young
I wish to acknowledge Mr. Bill McKinley from the Dunedin Clay Target and Henry Sim, who volunteer their time and knowledge so that our students can train each Wednesday after school out at Waldronville. Our students have had to overcome clashes with other sporting codes and make a commitment to shoot, with the success they have had this season. Thank you to the parents who have spent the money and traveled the kilometers to support their sons and the team at events. Nelson Young purchased a BBQ mounted to his truck that ensured the boys had hot food available. Finally, thank you to Jackson Stevens (2022–2025) in Year 13 for his contribution to Clay Target, especially his leadership this year. His father, Brendon Stevens, needs to be mentioned for solving our transportation issues and getting gear to National Competitions. His gazebo and table setup are the envy of many.
Our Clay Target Shooters had a busy term competing in Intercollegiate Competitions and preparing for the North Island and New Zealand Secondary School Championships. Our national events are being held at the Waikato Clay Target Club near Hamilton. On Saturday, students will participate in the North Island SSCTA DTL Competition, and on Sunday, the NZSSCTA DTL Competition. On Monday, the NISSCTAS Skeet and NZSSCTA Skeet are run consecutively.
The students competing are Jackson Stevens, Konrad Todd, Tom Collie, Dustin Young, Leo Burgess, and Charlie Hore. These students are each being accompanied by a parent. For these boys, it will be the highlight and conclusion of the secondary school shooting calendar this year. Our squad will be wanting to add to their South Island titles achieved at the end of term two. I am proud of how our students have conducted themselves and the growth in their shooting skills this year.
