August was a successful month for many of our groups. It has been amazing to see the talent displayed, from our Jazz Band and Choir competing regionally to the work of our visual art students.
This month has been about showcasing our best to the community. It is also exciting to confirm our annual OBHS Arts & Cultural Showcase 2025—an important event for both our students and the wider community to come together, celebrate, and recognise achievements over the year.

Jazz Band in Blenheim
Earlier this month, the Jazz Band attended the annual Southern Youth Jam in Blenheim. They performed songs such as Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me by Duke Ellington, Home at Last by Steely Dan, and another Ellington classic, Don’t Get Around Much Anymore.
The Band earned a silver award, and trumpeter Oban Voice received recognition for Best Improvisation within the smaller combo band All Blues. In addition, Callan Power represented the school in the All-Star Jazz Band.
After the competition, the bands took part in the Gala, showcasing their talent for the public to enjoy. Great work to the Jazz Band for their discipline, musicality, and swing!
Choir at Cadenza
The OBHS choir Mandate had the privilege of attending the New Zealand Big Sing Cadenza competition earlier this month. After travelling the two hours to Timaru, they earned a Whaurauroa (bronze) award.
The boys performed four pieces across two days: We Shall Not Sleep, The Lord's Prayer, Mambo Italiano (complete with a luscious blonde wig), and the set piece chosen by the organisers: Summer is Icumen In.
They also took part in the gala performance at the Sacred Heart Basilica, singing to a sold-out audience. Congratulations to the boys for their long hours of practice and hard work!
