Badminton Tournament Report

Our OBHS Badminton A team of Joseph Chen, Jayden Lu, Jeremy Frei, Levi Lu and Aaron Young played some exceptional badminton at the New Zealand Secondary School Championships to end their season.

Having already secured the Otago Secondary School Championship title and placing second at the South Island Secondary School Championships, the team went into the National tournament wearing their new OBHS badminton kit with pride and confidence.

The boys travelled to Porirua with their 2024 Div2 Championship trophy, and were eager to have a taste of the level of competition in Division 1.  Playing on multisport courts proved to be challenging in their initial pool ties, game results were 2-4 lost to King’s College and  3-3 one set lost on countback to Kirstin School. OBHS placed 3rd in their pool and narrowly missed out on playing for the top 8 national placings.  Once nerves had settled and the team got used to the playing conditions their play improved, it was more tactical and harder for their opponents to read.  Throughout the competition the team had some thrilling and tough close games, the highlight would be the teams win against Burnside of 3-3 with win on points countback!  The team went on to win all their remaining ties, and came home with 9th place finish in their debut in Division 1, and secured the top South Island Secondary school placing in the competition.

I cannot be more proud to have had the opportunity to stand at the line ups with OBHS Badminton A team.  What a way to wrap up the season, well done boys!
