Week 6 Hostel Update

By OBHS Hostel | Posted: Thursday August 21, 2025

Already we are six-tenths of the way through Term 3, and we are all looking forward to spring arriving and some warmer weather.

It has been a challenging week in the hostel, with many boys battling coughing and sinus infections. This can be frustrating for others trying to sleep through the echo of barking coughs. We highly recommend investing in some earplugs for those who are light sleepers. A reminder to please supply your sons with their own supply of throat lozenges, Panadol, Vitamin C, and nasal spray. Thank you.

The boys and hostel staff all benefited from having a down day on Wednesday due to the teachers’ strike. It was just what many of us needed to recharge our batteries.

John is continuing to encourage boys to get on board with preparing to pass their core Literacy and Numeracy exams. Please remind your sons to attend these sessions.

Student of the Week - Isaac Bain
For being courteous, showing initiative around the hostel, and working hard at school. Keep up the good work and top effort, Isaac!

A massive shout-out to Will Nichol, who has been selected for the New Zealand Under 18 Future Black Sticks. What an honour to be chosen for this awesome opportunity! We are all very proud of you, Will, and we wish you all the best with your training and overall development at this top level.

Congratulations to Judd Flannery, Jack Scott, Tomas Tisdall, and Tom Wilson on being named in the Otago Rugby Metro Under 18 team. Well done, boys—we look forward to watching your games. We hope you enjoy this level of competition, grow your skills, and thrive.

Also starring several hostel boys is the Otago Rugby Metro Under 16 team. Congratulations to Caleb Ede, Hunter Knox, Jazheil Lativa-Kadavaki, Marley Leevey, Logan Millar, Bob Tisdall, and Rahui Valli. It’s fantastic to see so many School House boys chosen in the squad.

South Island Secondary School Squash – The Hansen brothers excelled once again, showcasing their superior skills and dedication to become South Island Champions. A huge effort and a fantastic result—well done Zaivier, Mason, and Ashton Hansen!
