A day of inspiration at Otago University

Last week, a group of our Māori and Pasifika boys had the opportunity to visit the University of Otago to explore what studying might look like for them in the near future.

The day was all about connection, inspiration, and realising that university is a place where they can thrive — not just academically, but culturally and personally as well.

Our students were warmly welcomed and supported by the incredible teams at Te Huka Mātauraka – The Māori Centre and the Pacific Islands Centre, who shared the various ways they support tauira Māori and Pasifika throughout their academic journeys. From academic mentoring to cultural events, these spaces are truly dedicated to nurturing success and fostering a sense of belonging.

Kent Twaites, our Pasifika Liaison, and I had the pleasure of accompanying the boys on this engaging and culturally rich experience. We were well catered for, with a special lunch provided by Selwyn College.

A very special thank you to Jacqueline Irving for her mahi in organising and facilitating this visit, and to Scotty Opetaia, Tagiilima Feleti, Tama Walker, and Flynn Rosie from the University for giving their time to kōrero with our boys and help them see the possibilities ahead.

This was an important reminder to our tauira that they are seen, they are valued, and there is a place for them in tertiary study — surrounded by a strong whānau of support.
