This week sees the end of the Term 2 Languages option for Year 9 students of French and German.
They did a great job on their assessments, with some excellent pieces of writing being submitted. The Year 10 half-yearly options also came to a close, with some boys moving on to try out a new curriculum area, but pleasingly we see a 71.% retention rate in Languages as many boys commit to furthering their skills in Terms 3 and 4.
The Year 10 French boys rounded off the term with spoken and written presentations about a trip to Paris, a dream that will become reality for several boys when they join the OBHS French Language and Culture Tour in January 2026. In Year 10 German, boys presented about their hometown, comparing the present day to the past. You can view some examples of student work by clicking here.
What better way to celebrate all this hard mahi than with some delicious kai, giving boys a flavour of typical French and German cuisine. The good old German bratwurst made a reappearance alongside a delicious dessert of Spaghetti Eis for Year 9 German students. You can watch a clip about the history of this immigrant-inspired dish here. Year 10 German stuck to the sweet stuff, tucking into Apfelstrudel and Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte.
As the cold weather continues to set in, the warming comfort of Tartiflette was a welcome treat for the Year 9 French boys. This hearty dish, featuring potatoes, bacon, onions, cheese, and crème fraîche, originates from the Savoie region in the French Alps and is often served at winter markets in France. Year 10 French had fun experimenting with crêpe making on the newly acquired crêpières électriques, with some boys excelling at this skill, which is not as easy as it looks!
We wish all of these students who are moving on all the best for their next option and look forward to seeing some of them back in Languages later in the year or Year 10!
Bonne vacances!
