Lab Coats and Learning

The Year 13 Chemistry classes were hard at work in the Mellor labs at the University of Otago this week.

Completing the data-gathering component of their 3.1 Investigation, which involves quantitative analysis, was made much easier by having access to the university’s facilities and equipment.

Student investigations included quantifying the amount of chloride ions in seawater from different locations around Dunedin, measuring the vitamin C concentration in various fruit juices, and determining the percentage of manganese in different metal alloys.

In addition to the practical component, students were required to problem-solve, collaborate, and manage their time effectively to complete their work. They also learned about the health and safety requirements of the university laboratories and had the opportunity to experience a couple of days on campus.

We are very grateful to the University of Otago Chemistry Department for their ongoing support of the 3.1 projects.
