Week 7 Hostel Update

By OBHS Hostel | Posted: Thursday June 12, 2025

As the days grow shorter and darker, the weeks seem to be flying by faster, with Term 2 finishing on Friday, 27 June.

Please note that the school will be fully closed for Matariki weekend from Wednesday afternoon, 18 June. Parent interviews are scheduled for 18 June, followed by a Teachers Only Day on 19 June and Matariki on 20 June.

The hostel has had quite a few sick boys this week, many battling coughs and colds due to the challenges of the winter season. It is very important to dress appropriately for the weather and be mindful of the increased risks that come from overheating during exercise, then switching to summer clothes, going barefoot or wearing sandals, or staying in damp clothes after sporting sessions.

Matron has been encouraging boys to take Vitamin C and to cover their mouths when coughing, out of consideration for others. Boys are now required to bring their own lozenges, Vicks rub, and hot water bottles, please.

Last weekend, the hostel was in winter shutdown mode. Boys were more than happy to snuggle down and watch movies in their onesies. The games room, warmed by a good heat pump, was a popular spot, with table tennis and the pool table keeping everyone entertained.

A shout-out to all the boys who bravely shaved their heads for the recent fundraiser — quite a courageous move in the colder weather! It was also quite amusing to witness the “dodgy” hostel dye and haircut process. Beanies on, lads — well done!

Important Reminder

When making appointments with doctors, dentists, and physiotherapists, please try to schedule them after school hours whenever possible so boys do not miss valuable learning time. Thank you.
