Week 5 Hostel Update

By OBHS Hostel | Posted: Wednesday May 28, 2025

Last week was a very busy one at the Hostel, preparing for the Year 8 Open Day for potential boarders and their families, which was held on Friday, 23 May.

Thanks to Howie Nixon and Kristine Hellier for their extra efforts in sprucing up the grounds and gardens. The hostel staff and boys all worked hard to tidy everything up and make a good impression.

After a big push — hiding dirty rugby boots and quickly making a few messy beds — School House was indeed looking its best.

The weather gods were kind, and the sun shone beautifully as we welcomed new boarders to view School House and gave them an informative insight into “a day in the life of an OBHS boarder.”

This was followed by a walk over to the school and a presentation by Richard Harvey, outlining the courses available for next year and highlighting the overall academic success of OBHS compared to other schools.

On Saturday evening, School House hosted the Pre-Formal meet and greet. It was a valuable photo opportunity and a chance for parents to mingle while enjoying seeing their sons with their partners, all dressed up in formal attire. This was a wonderful way to kickstart the Year 13 evening. School House looked sensational with all the decorations. Thanks to Leah and the mums who helped rejuvenate the dining area into a glitzy place to chat and pose!

A reminder to all parents: yes, we are open for the long weekend this weekend.

We invite you to come along and lend a hand at our Garden Working Bee. We aim to tidy up the Hostel grounds on King's Birthday Monday, 2 June. We welcome all offers to help with general tidying and clearing away of garden debris from trees that were previously cut down.

If anyone has flaxes, grasses, or native plants they are happy to donate, these would be very much appreciated. Now that some overgrown trees have been felled, there are several areas needing some TLC around the outskirts of the hostel.

Thank you in advance — “Many hands make light work.”

Interschool Results

On Tuesday, we had an Interschool fixture with Timaru Boys' High School. The hockey boys performed extremely well, enjoying a win and two well-earned draws. The 1st XV had a massive comeback in the second half of what was an intense battle to eventually secure the win 22-19. A full list of results is included in another article in this week’s school newsletter.

Man of the Week – Rahui Valli

Rahui has mastered the art of remaining positive. His effervescent smile radiates good vibes throughout the whole hostel. Ra is a well-organised, conscientious student. Congratulations on being chosen as the Leader of Wairua Pūhou!
