Sword Returns Home

Otago Boys' High School is proud to welcome back a significant piece of its rich history, a ceremonial sword that carries deep ties to the school’s proud military tradition.

Former student Clive Bennett (1958–1959), who had been gifted the sword several years ago, has generously returned it to the school, recognising its importance within our community.

The sword, featuring a 78cm blade and a wirebound sharkskin grip, holds symbolic value for Otago Boys' as the birthplace of the first Cadet Forces Unit in New Zealand. Established in 1864, the unit marks the beginnings of what is the country’s oldest youth service organisation.

From these early days, Cadet units spread throughout New Zealand's schools and colleges, becoming widely recognised as "School Cadets." Many of our young men who trained in these units went on to serve their country in World War I, World War II, and other global conflicts.

The sword will be displayed at the school, as a testament to the enduring bond between our old boys and the current students.

We extend our sincere thanks to Mr. Bennett for his thoughtful gesture, and we look forward to students drawing inspiration from this piece of our past.
