Prefects Launch Reading Programme to Strengthen School Connections and Wellbeing

Today marked an exciting morning as some of our prefect team proudly launched a new reading programme in partnership with Balmacewen Intermediate.

This initiative is designed to foster deeper connections between our schools while promoting Hauora (wellbeing) through shared experiences in both sport and literacy.

The programme pairs our students with Balmac students in a buddy-style system that encourages mentorship, conversation, and, of course, a love for reading. It’s about more than just books, though. It’s about building relationships, confidence, and communication skills through meaningful interactions.

Ten of our prefects were the first to lead the charge, setting the tone for what promises to be an enriching and inspiring journey for both the “big” and “big little” students involved. Whether choosing a book together or out on the field for a quick game, students will engage in activities that boost emotional, social, and academic wellbeing.

Central to this programme is a desire to celebrate the joy of reading and all the benefits it brings our ākonga. From imagination and empathy to focus and language development, reading is a superpower we want all our students to unlock.

It was awesome to hear the reading from both our OBHS students and the Balmacewen students.
