“Respect for ourselves guides our morals, respect for others guides our manners” Laurence Sterne, Novelist

In junior assembly this week the winners of the first round of Junior Values Badges were announced for Respect, our value of the term. These badges are part of the Junior Value Badges reward initiative which is in its fourth year. They are a Rector’s Award.

The badges are designed to help boys focus on the value of the term and live our school values everyday. We reward boys who collect positive postcards, house points and a good grade point average in their effort grades. Since this has nothing to do with academics, everyone has a chance to succeed.

The value for Term 1 was respect and a total of 223 boys earned themselves a badge. This represents 63% of the junior school, the highest amount ever since the badges were introduced. Year 9 collected 46% of the badges but Year 10 outdid them with 54%. There were a few standout performances that are worthy of a special mention.

The highest GPA for effort in Year 10 was William Bolter with an impressive 4.86 (out of 5). In terms of the highest number of positive postcards, William had to share the glory with Arrsalan Nayle, with both boys receiving three postcards. The highest number of house points overall went to Alex Ma with fourteen.

Although Year 9 didn’t beat Year 10 overall as far as the number of badges is concerned, it could be said that the Year 9 cohort is just warming up! In terms of performances at the top end, they outperformed Year 10 in two out of three categories, so they are definitely nipping at the Year 10 heels!

The highest GPA went to An Xin Chang with 4.57. Again, two boys shared the highest number of postcards but this time with four postcards each. Well done to Tamati Matthews and Junior Smith. However, the absolute “Dunner Stunner” of a performance went to Jihoo Moon with a total of 25 House Points!

As ever, the House Competition is never far from the boys sights and the results are as follows:

1st Place - McIndoe House 61

2nd Place - Park House 58

3rd Place - Aspinall House 54

4th Place - Saxton House 51

Every year we have students and parents who wonder why they did not receive a badge but did get a postcard. The key thing that we are looking for is that a boy’s effort grade is around 3.8 or more. This shows us that in every class, boys are meeting an acceptable standard of effort and behaviour and that in some classes they are excelling this expectation. So, if your son didn’t receive a badge but got a postcard, this is the perfect opportunity to chat with him about how he could improve his effort grade.

Boys must meet these criteria to gain a badge. The criteria for gaining a badge are as follows:

●        a positive postcard home OR 4 House points

●        AND a grade point average in effort of 3.8 or above

The value for Term 2 is Courage and we hope your son will embrace this by perhaps trying out a new sport or club, making a concerted effort in class to be brave and put his hand up or take some risks in his learning. It could mean even having the courage to stand up for others and speak out when he sees something wrong.

We invite junior boys to show us what they are courageous enough to do in Term 2!
