On the first day back each term, I have a number of conversations with boys about what they got up to in the break.
Some have fantastic stories to tell about adventures and activities that kept them entertained for a couple of weeks. However, it is all too common for students to reply with "not much", "slept", or "got bored". As much as rest and rejuvenation is an important function of the two weeks, it is a shame that we often spend weeks looking forward to the holiday, only to see it disappear, and return to school with a tinge of regret.
In SHL this week, we all came up with a few things we would like to accomplish in the holidays that would serve as memorable markers of a holiday well spent. Ideas included learning to make a lasagne (and cook it for the family), go camping, fitness routines, and attend the ANZAC service.
For most, the two weeks will fly by. As well as some well-deserved relaxing, maybe think about putting in a few rewarding endeavours that you can be proud to tell your friends or teachers when you get back in Term 2.
And I'm sure the family will appreciate whatever it is you attempt to cook.
