With wet and cold weather forecast for Tuesday, the Year 13 Outdoor Education overnight tramp was pushed back a day — and what a difference that made!
Although the change meant several students had to withdraw due to other commitments, the eleven who headed into the Silver Peaks on Wednesday showed resilience, teamwork, and a solid sense of adventure.
The group faced the infamous walk up to Philip Cox Memorial Hut and the Devil’s Staircase — parts of the track that now hold a special meaning (and a few sore legs!) for those who climbed them. Under a clearing sky, the boys competently set up camp and cooked their meals, with many taking the opportunity to lie back and stargaze — spotting satellites and sharing stories under the night sky.
This tramp was part of their assessment for Achievement Standard 3.9, where students were required to plan and implement strategies to complete a challenging overnight tramp. After testing their plans on a day tramp earlier in the term, the group refined their approach — and it paid off. The class will now reflect and evaluate their experiences as part of their final write-up.
Well done to those who took on the Silver Peaks Loop and made it out with both muddy boots and valuable memories!
