Glendhu Bay, Wanaka, 27-28 March.
The pinnacle event on the secondary school multisport calendar took place at Glendhu Bay, Wanaka, under overcast skies, with the best young athletes from across the country competing. The competition was fierce, and our students put in some outstanding performances.
In the triathlon, our standout result came in the U-19 mixed team relay, where Ruie Hyslop and his team fought hard in a tight contest but had to settle for bronze. Henry Hodgson also competed in the mixed team relay, with his team securing 7th place. The shift to a regional approach rather than school teams brought a new dynamic, with Otago/Southland claiming overall victory!
In the individual events, there were several commendable efforts. Fergus Lloyd showed resilience after suffering a bee sting, finishing 14th in the U-14 boys triathlon. Ruie Hyslop, backing up from two days at the Southern Region Futsal Tournament, placed 13th in the U-19 boys, missing the lead pack out of the swim. Henry Hodgson, always up for a challenge, competed in three events, placing 15th in the U-16 boys triathlon, 4th in the aquathon, and also taking part in the open water swim, where results are yet to be confirmed. Unfortunately, Robert Lloyd was unable to compete due to illness.
In the open water swim event, held on Friday afternoon, following the mixed team relays, Fletch McCall continued his dominance, storming to victory in the U-14 boys 1000m race.
A huge congratulations to all our athletes for their efforts against the country’s best.
