The Challenge Wanaka Schools' Triathlon returned to the picturesque Wanaka lakefront this year, shifting from its previous location at Glendhu Bay.

The vibrant and noisy event village set an energetic tone for the day, though it made hearing the race briefing a challenge. Nevertheless, by the time the races started, all competitors were well-prepared and ready to go.

The low lake level presented an interesting twist to the swim leg, with many athletes opting to run and porpoise through the shallow waters. This played to the advantage of strong swimmers, who were able to break away early and establish solid leads.

The bike course proved to be a true test of endurance, featuring a hilly start. However, competitors were rewarded with a largely downhill return leg, complemented by a much-appreciated tailwind. This allowed many athletes to execute negative splits, making for some impressive performances.

As the race progressed into the midday heat, temperatures soared to a scorching 30 degrees, adding an extra layer of difficulty, particularly in the run leg. The heat took its toll on many competitors, pushing them to dig deep in the final stretch.

Despite the tough conditions, the Otago Boys' High School team delivered a standout performance. With only eleven athletes competing this year, they still made a significant impact on the results board. Ruie Hyslop dominated the U-19 Boys category, securing a comfortable win. Henry Hodgson showcased his endurance and talent by finishing third in the Challenge Wanaka event and claiming first place in the Otago Champs for the U-16 Boys. In the U-16 Boys Teams event, Oli Isles, Bede Perkins, and Hunter Knox placed second overall in the Challenge Wanaka race but emerged as the top team among Otago schools. Leo Garden was also close to reaching the podium, demonstrating his strong form. Robert Lloyd, who returned as an individual competitor, rounded out the strong performances in this age group.

The event also saw promising performances from newcomers, with Fergus Lloyd making a solid debut in the U-14 Boys, and Charlie Swan, Bede Roy, and George Murray impressing in the U-16 teams category.

Congratulations to all our athletes for their resilience and hard-fought performances in the Challenge Wanaka Schools' Triathlon. The blue and white colours of OBHS were well-represented, and we look forward to seeing more success in the races to come this season. Thanks, too, to the many parents who got their sons to the start line and provided valuable support.
