Otago Southland Secondary Schools Water Ski Championships 2025

Sunday, 23 February, Bannockburn Inlet.

The Otago/Southland Secondary Schools Water Ski Championships will be held on Sunday, 23 Feburary and is open to Otago and Southland secondary school pupils. The organising body is the Otago Water Ski Club, and the event is approved by the Otago and Southland Secondary Schools Sports Associations. The format remains unchanged from last year. In recent years there have been around 30 skiers participating, so this is a family fun event with friendly and spirited competition.

Please note: the event is smoke and drug free, in line with school sports policies.

Eligibility

All students must be enrolled at an Otago or Southland secondary school (Years 9 - 13) on the date of the event and entered in an age division up to and including, boys or girls under 19 years.

Divisions

There are two divisions, Novice and Championship, so that students of varying slalom ski abilities can participate. the novice divisions are for students who have not completed the full championship slalom course. The novice course will use an additional buoy placed 3 meters inside each championship turn buoy, which makes the slalom course much easier to complete. They will score 0.5 points per buoy while championship skiers will score 1 point per buoy.

The event will include two rounds of slalom competition and divisions include:

  • Championship boys and girls (13 years and under)

  • Championship boys and girls (16 years and under)

  • Championship boys and girls (18 years and under)

  • Novice boys and girls (13 years and under)

  • Novice boys and girls (16 years and under)

  • Novice boys and girls (18 years and under)

Venue - Please note venue change from previous years

The competition will be held at Banockburn Inlet. Briefing will be held on the beach at the southern end of the inlet at 8.20am and championship skiers will ski shortly thereafter, starting from this beach. The inlet will be closed to other boats for the day to allow the competition to be run without wakes and other boats. Thre are several spots around the inlet for family and friends to view the skiing.
