“Excellence is not a gift, but a skill that takes practice. We do not act rightly because we are excellent, in fact, we achieve excellence by acting rightly.” Plato
In this penultimate week of term, the juniors were awarded the Term 4 Value Badge for Excellence. Once more, a healthy number of boys demonstrated this value and 239 badges were issued. The staff have played a big part in ensuring buy-in to the Values Badge initiative. 182 postcards were written and a staggering 744 house points awarded. Boys should take time to thank their teachers for this mahi which has enabled them to shine.
It was Aspinall House who won this term’s count, with McIndoe in second place, Park and Saxton drew for the final placing. This year it has been decided to make the winning of these Excellence Badges count for something, just as the previous terms’ badges did. Usually, the house competition starts from scratch at the start of every school year. Some boys had the idea that the work they have done to get badges could kick-start next year’s house competition. It is also a way of letting the senior boys know how well the juniors in their house have been doing in their absence. It represents a kind of koha to their house.
Other notable highlights of Term 4 were as follows :
Highest effort grade Year 9 (4.86) - William Bolter, who remains undefeated this year.
Highest effort grade Year 10 (a perfect 5) - Tanveer Singh, for the second term running.
Highest number of house points Year 9 (11 HP) - Aditha Ranawaka.
Highest number of house points Year 10 (15 HP) - Oscar Sharpe and Mohit Singh.
Highest number of postcards Year 9 (4) - Maximilian Kaiser.
Highest number of postcards Year 10 (3) - Zach Cashmore.
Of course, collecting the four badges of Respect, Courage, Perseverance and Excellence also qualifies boys to receive the final Honour badge. A student-led panel decided that the final badge should be Honour because if boys displayed the other four values, they were deemed to be honouring themselves as a learner, their school, their whanau and the wider school community. Boys have two years to collect all of the badges, so those who miss out in Year 9 should still work towards this in Year 10.
Getting the Honour badge is rightly harder than gaining individual badges and 87 boys crossed the stage today to collect this award. These young men are now role models in the junior school. We will look to them to not only uphold the values but also to remind their brothers that they should do so as well.
In 2023, we have introduced the “Above the Hoops” badge. This can only be awarded in Year 10 and is for boys who gain all of the badges, every term in both Year 9 and Year 10. It is the ultimate values badge award and can be worn with pride on the senior blazer. 38 boys qualified for this badge which will be given out at junior prize giving on Tuesday.
We want boys to live the school values and not just talk about them. To truly have honour one must have respect, courage, perseverance and strive for personal excellence. All our values require you to not only do the right thing but to challenge others to do so and to speak up when you see something’s going wrong. In this way, we place our values at the heart of our daily life at Otago Boys’ High School. Acting rightly creates a better environment for all.
