There was excitement in the air as the fantastic class of 10S gathered early on Saturday morning to load the bus for their adventure to the Matukituki Valley.
Under the expert guidance of Mr McGarry, who was covering for Mr Scott until Sunday, the lads traveled safely to the lodge and worked together to get in and settled for their week.
They were rewarded with an afternoon of fishing, swimming, and hanging out around the river. Unbeknown to them at the time, this would pay dividends. On their return to the river the next day, some of the lads knew exactly where to cast their lines. Two trout were caught and cooked for lunch. Mr Scott timed his arrival to share in the spoils - yummy!
After this nourishment, we were full of energy to tackle the hike to Rob Roy Glacier, where we were met with breathtaking views. We even witnessed a few avalanches in the distance. The boys think it was Mr Scott’s expert “cooeying” that set them off.
Monday was our overnight expedition to the East Branch - Triangle Rock. The lads had a successful night in the camp, fishing, swimming, and talking around the campfire. After checking out a few more waterfalls and glaciers on Tuesday morning, we headed home for the lodge. What a feeling to get back into camp!
Wednesday was our wet adventure day. Following morning chores, we headed to Wishbone Falls for a swim just as the clouds broke. It’s always spectacular. From there it was back to the river, where Mr Adler was a fantastic kayak instructor, showing his expertise in the wilderness. The rapids were run and boats were tipped. The lads showed a keen sense of resilience to enjoy the fresh water of the Matukituki. The afternoon saw some well-earned downtime around the lodge before dinner and a talent quest to finish the night. Thursday was the big clean-up morning, as we raced to get everything sorted and get out to meet the bus for our journey home.
A massive thank you to Flynn Wilson (Year 13) who gave up his week to come and assist the teachers. What a legend of a bloke and a great role model for our future leaders.
Also, a massive thanks to Sam Hewson (old boy) who came up for the week following graduating from his law degree. His expertise and positive attitude are a credit to him and to OBHS.
Thank you to Ms Sinclair and Mr Adler who were brilliant teacher leaders. Finally, thanks to Mr McGarry who gave up his weekend to get the camp started.
The lads were a fantastic group to have away, and families can be very proud of them.
