Otago Boys’ High School is a Year 9-13 secondary school for boys. It was established in 1863. Today there are over 800 students, including approximately 140 hostel boys and a small number of international students, enrolled at any one time. In 2023, we celebrated 160 years.
As a new student to Otago Boys', we welcome you. You have chosen a fine school, one with opportunity, with caring and clever teachers, one who values you. One where you can feel you belong.
Your job is to try your best every day.
No one student is expected to know everything on the first day. Even those of you who have had an older brother go through this school will still be nervous. That is ok, we understand.
So let's start with the basics. Being on time to school, to your lessons, and after school activities is a must. People are relying on you, so you need to meet that expectation.
Every time you wear our school uniform, our PE uniform or sports kit, you are representing the school, you are on show. People know where you come from, be proud to look good, that includes your hair and your grooming.
Phones are banned within the school grounds. You do not need them. Switch it off and leave it in your bag. Please be aware we take this and all our rules very seriously.
The House and Form Class structure are there to support you, to help you feel a sense of belonging, ask your form teacher and your 'big brother' lots of questions, they will be happy to answer them.
Live our values:
Respect
Courage
Perseverance
Excellence
Honour
Remember, they will not only help you inside the school, but also in life. The junior values badges, awarded once a term are an excellent way to show your commitment. Wear them on your tie.
Our school looks forward to your time here. Put in the effort and I am sure you will have a fantastic 5 years.
We cannot wait to get started.
