They weren't wrong when they said high school would fly by.
In my final week of high school, it's surreal to think just how quickly these years have passed. The years have been filled with experiences, challenges and growth. Looking back, most of these experiences are not necessarily ones that can be taught in a classroom.
I've met people I wouldn't have otherwise, some who have shaped my journey in ways I'll carry with me long after I leave the archway. I'd like to share some ideas and lessons that I've gathered along the way. One of the most important is simply this:
Be present
Life goes fast, whether it's on the sports field, in the classroom or hanging out with your mates, enjoy the moment and be engaged. Put the phones away and just be present, create real memories. Time is short so make the most of it.
Be your own man
We live in a world where we are constantly surrounded by influences. Social media makes it hard, and we constantly compare ourselves to others. Don’t be afraid to go against the grain or challenge what's considered "cool".
Have your own core values and stick to them, even when it's not the popular choice. Stand up for what you believe in, even if it means you're standing alone.
Facing challenges
Continue to put yourself in situations where you are forced to become better, this is something I strongly believe.
In other words, don't get comfortable being comfortable. It is during being uncomfortable that progress is made, and you begin to realise what you are capable of.
Obviously, this is different for everyone and things that are easy for some will be hard for others. Embrace your challenges as they sharpen your skills, build character and reveal what you are truly capable of.
As my Year 13 peers and I prepare to walk out of the archway for the last time, I want to ask you this. What will you carry forward from your time here? How will you take these moments and challenges into whatever comes next?
