The OMAthalon competitions are a highlight of the academic year for our mathematicians.
Senior OMAthalon
This year we had 4 senior teams participate in the senior OMAthalon on Thursday 15th, the most we have had for some time. Our top finishing team was our Year 13 team of Thomas Hayman, Chunwoo Munn, Luke Woo and Ethan Maw with what I thought was a great name (Acute-e-PI). The Year 11 and 12 teams also sought bragging rights with the Year 11 teams narrowly missing out to the top finishing Year 12 team.
Thanks very much to all the students who came along making it a terrific evening and a lot of fun for all involved.
OBHS Y - Aaron Young, Joseph Chen and Will DIng
OBHS 5th IV - Robbie Nichol, Kase Robertson, Jayden Lu and Josh Geddes
OBHS W - Jack Ussher, Liam Elder, Hamish Grindlay and Max Cutfield
Junior OMAthalon
One of the high points in the Dunedin academic and sporting calendar occurred last night at the Edgar Centre. Combining the excitement of running in a circle with doing really hard maths. This year we had 6 Year 9 teams putting their hand up, the most of any school in Dunedin as well as 3 Year 10 teams.
The Year 9s did really well with all the teams appearing on the leaderboard at some point during the night. Once all was said and done the team of Levi Lu, Callan Power, Finn Breen and Zac Elder were our top finishers with a very respectable 3rd finishing 1 point behind St Hilda's and 1 point ahead of Otago Girls' on a total of 44 points.
The Year 10s were coming in with some pressure having just handed back the Year 9 trophy from the year before. Again, all the teams featured on the leaderboard through the course of the evening but in the end one team pulled comfortably clear winning by an extraordinarily comfortable margin of 10 points and scoring 54 out of a possible 60, the new Year 10 OMAthalon Champions are Henry Hodgson, Sam Goodchild, George Garden and Flynn Richards. It is extremely unusual for a team to win back to back like that so thoroughly well deserved, they will be stepping up to the senior competition next year so might give that a bit of a shake up.
Thanks to all the students, staff and parents who made that a successful event and to the OMA who organise that for all schools across Dunedin.
