It is a busy term for trips in Outdoor Education. The Year 13 class leave this Sunday afternoon for their Snow Sports Assessment trip. They will spend three days skiing and snowboarding at Coronet Peak under the expert guidance of NZ Ski instructors.
The Year 12 Outdoor Education classes have recently returned from their Snow Farm trip and are now well into their planning and preparations for an up-coming cycle tour to the MacKenzie District. The past two weeks have seen them developing a meal plan, researching a section of the Alps2Ocean Trail and determining the timings for the day they are responsible for leading. Part of their preparations have also included physically preparing; by developing bike handling skills, doing some basic bike maintenance and completing rides and gym sessions to get the relevant fitness components to where they need to be to endure a multi-day cycling trip.
The photos are of Mr Willmott’s Year 12 Outdoor Education class riding the ‘Easy Down’ track at Signal Hill. The focus of this ride being standing on the pedals, looking ahead, braking early and getting into the ‘attack’ position (with elbows and knees bent). Some of the boys have already got this dialled in, as you can see from the photos.
