Our hockey season has been a resounding success, marked by impressive performances and tremendous growth across all five teams.
White: Coached by senior players Archie Colquhoun, Max Smith, and Nick Hayes, the White’s capped off a stellar season with a strong third-place finish. Their dedication and teamwork were evident throughout the season.
Gold: Under the guidance of Fergus Oberlin-Brown, Will Nichol, and Lachie Smith, along with specialist goalkeeper coaching from Coen Breen, the Golds reached the Division 3 final. Despite a close penalty shootout, they finished an impressive second place. Their performance this season was remarkable.
Hoops: The Hoops showed incredible improvement, finishing fourth in Division Two. A huge thank you to Martin James for his tireless efforts in coaching and teaching the team. With his support, the Hoops have developed a more structured and composed game and are set to be strong contenders in Division Two next year. We wish them the best at the Coaches Cup during Tournament Week.
U15 Blue: The U15 Blue team excelled by finishing 6th at the Tanner Cup in Hamilton among 22 of the country's top U15 teams and winning Division Two for the second consecutive year. Their play was exceptional, led by a fantastic management team including Ben Sinnamon, Jacob Smith, Dani Stephenson, and Linh Ashton.
1XI: The highlight of the season was the 1XI’s triumph in Division One, winning the championship for the first time in eleven years. Their victory in a thrilling penalty shootout against John McGlashan College was a testament to their hard work and commitment. The team’s dedication to running their own fitness sessions, holding each other accountable, and maintaining great sportsmanship was inspiring.
A special mention goes to Archie Colquhoun, Coen Breen, and Will Nichol for their outstanding representation of the Otago U18 team. Additionally, a big congratulations to Fergus Oberlin-Brown for being named in the Future Blacksticks squad. Fergus will be attending the New Zealand U18 training camp later this year, marking a significant milestone in his hockey career.
Thank you to Kat Nichol for her crucial role as Assistant Coach and Manager. The 1XI is now gearing up for the Rankin Cup in Tauranga, ready to make their mark at the top national secondary school tournament.
With a strong player depth, talented coaches, and the inclusion of hockey in our Junior High Performance Sport Academy, our hockey program is set for continued growth and success. Exciting times ahead for our sport!
