The day culminated with three student donors who, like all our volunteers were very happy to try to do their bit for our region, knocking on my door, extremely happy with themselves. They had a plaque for the school from the NZ Blood Service thanking all our students for their service to the community.
This was the end of a very good day, where our Year 12 and Year 13 students, stepped up, listened to the need and with altruism at the centre of their decision making decided to act in larger numbers than ever before (approximately 26 students). They gave blood willingly with the understanding that they would never know who they helped or what situation people who they helped were in at the time. Their selfless act is in the best traditions (Tō tātou tikanga) of OBHS.
Shortly after this visit came a follow up email from the NZ Blood Service commending our students on their exemplary behaviour while donating and also for their service. They outlined that this donation consisted of 21 whole units of blood that could save up to 63 lives.
Many thanks to all who came forward intending to, and/or did, volunteer to give blood. Below are the names of our volunteers:
Joel McFadgen, Josef Chamberlain, Flynn Wilson, Johnathon King, Emerson Walker, Jaxon Maze, Ben Roy, Ben Richards, Thomas Hayman, Ethan Maw, Finn Marshall, Dallas Pankhurst, Kade Jackson, Zion Wikio, Charlie Ottrey, Harry McGuigan, Afiq Rizal, Deigo Gollner, Oliver Reid, Min Shin, Hugo Barsby, Oliver MacKenzie, Riley Schaffer, Gunha Park, Freddie Hore and Lachie Hall.
