Tēnā koutou to the parents and caregivers of all Year 12 and 13 students aged sixteen and over.
Our annual blood donation day has arrived for our Year 12 and 13 students aged sixteen and over.
Below outlines the blood donation process and other relevant information so that students that are potentially eligible can make informed decisions. Please note this email is to all Year 12/13 students, parents, and caregivers.
When
The date set is Tuesday the 13th of August in the morning at three times: 9.05am, 9.45am and 10.20am. A free bus to and from the NZ Blood Service is provided.
Where do I sign up
The signup sheet, further details about eligibility and logistics for 13 August, Blood Donation is at Mr Wither's (Guidance Counsellors office located in the "Castle" far side in the far right blue door as you face towards “the castle” beside his office door) or alternatively you can contact me via my email - [email protected]
What you need to know
You need to be sixteen and over (Year 12 and 13) plus certain criteria to donate blood with ID (please see sheet attached below for further details).
We need eighteen student volunteers plus further reserves (to cater for potential contingencies such as illness, eligibility issues and unavailability).
All students that volunteer regardless of being in a position to donate or not will be recognised by the school.
Further detailed information below that is attached, outlines the procedure, where to get further detailed information so that students, parents and caregivers can make informed decisions and to check the criteria for eligibility.
Finally, this is a notification to parents and caregivers, should your child wish to donate blood, we will be sharing your contact details with the NZ Blood Service. (Rationale for this is for health and safety reasons to support your child's safe blood donation on the day, should they need to go home to rest as a contingency).
Facts around Blood Donation
Every day 83 NZ’s will need lifesaving blood or plasma.
Every 18 minutes someone in NZ needs blood or plasma.
Blood only lasts 35 days.
One blood donation can save up to three lives.
O+ and A+ are the two most common blood types in NZ, so there is always demand for those types.
Once you donate, you will find out what your blood type is.
Here is the NZ school blood donors video link that has also been shown to students at senior assembly on Tuesday, 30th July for our Year 12 and 13 students aged 16 and over.
