“He who is not courageous will accomplish nothing in life.” Muhammad Ali (World Champion Boxer and Civil Rights Activist)

This week in junior assembly, School Value of the Term awards were handed out. In total, 191 boys received Courage Badges. In a show of strength, Year 9 outflanked Year 10 gaining 58% of all badges awarded and coming top in every one of the special categories.

A big thank-you should go to the teaching staff who took the time to write positive postcards and award house points. The staff recognise that giving these out helps to improve relationships with boys, which leads to better learning. Boys are hopefully seeing that if they do the mahi, they get the rewards. Criteria for gaining a badge can be found in the homework diary.

There were a few standout performances that are worthy of a special mention.

Highest GPA for effort (out of 5):
Year 9 - William Bolter 4.81
Year 10 - Nyein Chan Pyay Ti 4.68

Highest number of positive postcards:
5 postcards - Jacob Houltshousen Year 9

Highest number of house points:
12 house points - James Phipps-Green Year 9

The Junior Value Badges scheme will also contribute towards the house competition and the results are as follows:

1st Place - McIndoe House (54)
2nd Place - Aspinall House (50)
3rd Place - Park House (44)
4th Place - Saxton House (43)

Badges look great worn on the tie or the shirt collar and boys should wear their badges with pride around the school! Badges look great and are a reminder to those yet to gain a badge that they have something to aim for every term. The school value for Term 3 is perseverance.

What does perseverance mean in terms of boys’ learning? It means a lot of different things. Some boys may think they need less perseverance in their academic learning, as this comes easier to them. Does that mean they don’t need to persevere? Of course not. There is always the next, more difficult task to apply oneself to. So, next term, boys try some of the following:

  • DON’T GIVE UP, even though you may find the work hard.

  • TRY to make breakthroughs in your learning and get to the next level, one step at a time, ask your teachers for advice.

  • REMIND yourself of the progress you have already made this year.  This will give you energy to go on in the future.

All boys can find some area in which to persevere. Whether it is in their academic learning, navigating a difficult circumstance, challenging themselves in sport or keeping going with a musical instrument that they feel like giving up, perseverance will surely lead to great rewards. Use the brotherhood at Otago Boys' to support you. This is how all great teams succeed, by persevering, supporting, and encouraging each other.

Courage Badges were awarded to the following boys. If you missed assembly, please pick up your badge from Ms Kelly in Room 2. Similarly, if you feel an error was made, please speak to Ms Kelly.
