Our thoughts and sincere sympathy go out to the family of the boy who tragically lost his life yesterday in central Dunedin.
Actions and consequences are things we often discuss with students and in our wider community, but a tragedy like this brings home the stark reality of what consequences can actually occur.
Young people make bad choices, it is part of growing up, but the frustrating thing for everyone is that often little pre-thought is given to what the outcome might be. A death like this brings us an opportunity to actually discuss with our children the idea that there are very real consequences for our actions, and in this case life altering ones.
As parents it is vital that you stay as close as possible to your child during these difficult times, be that Mum who is 'the only one' who wants to know where your son is, make that phone call to see where they will be staying, and please, please be very strict on his behaviour when he gets his driving licence. Having lived in the Hawkes Bay in the early 2000's, I know only too well the tragic consequences of poor driving decisions.
So I ask, if there is any small positive we can get out of this and as recognition of the life lost, spend some time this weekend talking with your son about decision making, about emotional control and about how, with you, and us, there is always a safe space to talk.
Today we have supported a number of young men and their families, this is part of who we are, and we will continue to do this. If you feel your son is struggling, then please reach out first, even if you are unsure.
