There are multiple opportunities to develop our literacy and numeracy skills in everyday life, not just in English and Maths classes.
We know that students are more likely to learn and retain new information when it's been learnt through real life and relevant contexts. Ms Moore has had her Year 10's developing their numeracy skills in Food and Nutrition classes by adjusting recipes to feed amounts of people not given in the recipe.
Other ways numeracy can be developed at home are through helping with the grocery shopping and sticking to budgets, working out percentages through sales in town, working out what ratios of time should be spent on different activities or working out the chance of their favourite sports team winning in the weekend. Footballers might be able to tell me what chance the Wellington Phoenix have of beating Melbourne Victory this weekend in their semi final!
