Please note, the following information was shared with parents, caregivers and whanau earlier this week in letter form.
As you may be aware, the NCEA change programme has tweaked some of the requirements for students to attain NCEA. Students must pass 10 literacy credits (5 reading and 5 writing) and 10 numeracy credits to achieve all NCEA levels. There are now two ways students can achieve this, page 4 of this document outlines these in more detail.
To support students in understanding more about these assessments and to provide some useful resources to help support you, we have developed a website. There is a section for parents and caregivers, which we recommend you take a look at. This website aims to assist students in their exam preparation. Additionally, we are supporting students through class preparation and discussing these assessments in upcoming assemblies.
Year 11
In 2023, most of our Year 10 students attempted the new standalone literacy and numeracy assessment tasks, known as Common Assessment Activities (CAAs). Some have met the required standard and some have not. To see if your son has passed you can check their results on the school portal under their results sections. Year 11 students should know if they have passed already or not, and it would pay to have a discussion with your son about this. You can check the document 'How to check your son's progress with the corequisite assessments' to know how your son is progressing with these assessments.
In week 4 of this term, we are providing all current Year 11 students with the opportunity to reattempt these exams if they previously did not pass or were not entered in 2023. Specific testing dates can be found below. If your son has already passed the writing standard they will have a late start and will be expected to be at school at 11:30am for the start of period 3, if they need to arrive early at school they can work in the library.

Year 10
The information below outlines our plan to administer the new standalone literacy and numeracy assessment tasks, known as Common Assessment Activities (CAAs) to our Year 10 students.
There are two assessment ‘windows’ each year for students to complete these exams. The first of which is in late May and the second is in September. Students who do not enter, sit or do not pass these exams this year can have a further attempt as Year 11 students. They may be entered as many times as it takes to reach the standard.
Literacy- We have decided that at this point in the year only those Year 10 students who have demonstrated readiness and capability to achieve the standard will be entered. We have used a combination of PAT and e-asttle data to determine readiness, these are standardised tests students have completed this year.
Those students who will be entered for the reading and writing assessments in week five (Wednesday 29th May) will receive notification through a separate email. The remaining Year 10 students will be entered into the exam in the next assessment window, which will take place in September. We feel the majority of our Year 10 students will benefit from additional teaching and learning opportunities throughout the remainder of this year to improve their chances of success in these assessments.
Numeracy- September will also be the first opportunity for all Year 10 students to attempt the numeracy assessment. However, students will only be entered if they are ready. If they are not ready, they will do the assessment as a Year 11 student in 2025.
