Over the course of the term, Otago Boys’ High School has had six junior students partaking in fortnightly debates at Logan Park High School.
Wednesday marked the last debate of the term, with OBHS 2 taking on Trinity College, negating a topical issue: Should parents be punished for their child’s truancy?
Callum, as the first speaker, started off strong with a great rebuttal to the affirming team. He was followed by a convincing second speaker, Sammie. William, as the third speaker, closed the argument with strength. OBHS 2 represented Otago Boys’ immensely well, and they demonstrated a united front and the spirit of the school.
Over the course of the debate, both teams raised strong points. However, after many rebuttals, points of clash and teamwork, OBHS narrowly lost to the affirming team.
All speakers did a wonderful job, showing excellent oratory skills in the process. Though I had the pleasure of only watching one of our teams, all junior debaters have shown great courage at taking on a new skill this term. Both Ms Bagley and I look forward to seeing their debating skills continue to develop throughout the rest of the year.
