What a great week for these Year 10 boys at the Mt Aspiring Lodge.
A busy week started well with fine weather getting into the Lodge. Mr Willmott and his team of Tim Hyslop, Fiona Thomas and Richard Sykes prepared the boys well and the next day they headed off up the East Branch on their overnight camp. With tents set up the boys hit the water for a well-deserved swim. Jumping off the triangular rock is always a special part to this camping spot. Next the senior boys got the beach fire cranked up and started some activities on the sand. The favourite part was the beach sprints which turned very competitive as you can imagine. As the night turned very dark the boys crept into bed along with copious sandflies to keep them company.
The next day was spent walking back and cleaning up. Mr McGarry swapped in for Mr Willmott who had to return to school.
Day three was spent learning some kayaking skills under the bridge. This is probably the first time the boys had paddled on a moving current, but all managed well in the warm conditions and mostly stayed dry. Each day the boys completed their duties of chopping wood, cleaning the bathrooms and sweeping out the lodge. The meals were well prepared under the guidance of staff and senior boys.
Day 4 saw a walk to view the Rob Roy Glacier, a swim and lunch at Wishbone Falls, orienteering around the farm and then as it got dark a visit to the glow worms up the next valley.
Clean-up on the final day went well, and the boys made their way out to meet the bus and the long ride home.
The senior boys, Rohan, Tom, Lachie and Enoch were brilliant all week, supporting and encouraging the boys to give things a go.
