Chemistry Club started last week (because – let’s face it – you can’t have enough chemistry!).
The goal is to introduce Year 12 Chemistry students to the concepts covered in organic chemistry, partly in preparation for Scholarship Chemistry next year.
With that in mind, this week’s lunch time session involved investigating the properties of alkanes and alkenes to figure out how to tell them apart. We found that we couldn’t use their solubility in water or how combustible they were to tell them apart, but that alkenes reacted quickly with bromine water and potassium permanganate.
Our next session will be in Week 11, so watch this space for more updates.
